About the Texas Bluebonnet Award
The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books.
Each year, the TBA Selection committee reads hundreds of books in order to identify twenty quality books across a variety of genres. Included in each Master List are books for students in grades 3-5, including an easier book as well as a stretch book.
Students who read at least five of the year’s selected books by January 15 are eligible to attend the BLUEbonnet Celebration where they will be served BLUE-themed foods, complete BLUE-themed crafts, vote for their favorite Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee. Votes from students across the state will be tabulated, and the winning title will be announced by the Texas Library Association in early February.
In order for students to receive credit for reading a current Bluebonnet Award nominee each student will need to complete a Bluebonnet Book Review for each title read. In addition, students can also visit the Bluebonnet Blog which hosts discussions specifically about the current Bluebonnet Award nominees.
